What is term life insurance?
Term life insurance guarantees financial protection for beneficiaries over a specific period (i.e., the term) before it expires. If you die before the end of the term, your beneficiaries will receive a life insurance death benefit that can be applied toward funeral costs and other related expenses.
How does it work?
Term life insurance is not only easier to manage than permanent life insurance (which lasts for the remainder of your life and has a cash value), it’s also more cost effective. Terms typically run between 10 and 30 years. After the term expires, you can opt to renew your policy, convert your policy to permanent coverage or forego your coverage. Premiums are based on a variety of factors, including age, health status, gender and policy choice, and can be paid monthly or annually.
You can choose the length of your term and your coverage amount, so you won’t have to pay for more financial protection than you’ll require. Unless you will be providing life-long financial support or have unique circumstances, term life insurance coverage typically makes more financial sense than permanent life insurance.
